Here's some numbers that have been gathered by the Quinte Real Estate Board for January of 2010.

By all indications, the market is very strong, and we are in for a surprisingly good year. January 2010 was the 7th straight month where there was an increase over the same month in 2009.

There were 1273 active residential listings for January 2010.

120 properties sold in January 2010.

$0 to $99k, 23 sales out of a total 120,
$100k to $199k, 46 sales out of a total 120,
$200k to $259k, 35 sales out of a total 120,
$260k to $399k, 14 sales out of a total 120,
$400k to $499k, 1 sale out of a total 120,
$500k +, 1 sale out of a total 120,

If you are thinking about selling your home this year, these numbers should be giving you something to think about.

December 2009 Housing Statistics

As this map of Canada makes quite apparent, the statistics for housing prices both nationally and provincially are either very good or very bad, depending on your point of view.

A healthy Real Estate market is the engine of a good economy, but things can look a little discouraging when you are on the outside looking in, and you are looking to buy your first home.

Many people who I talk to don't follow the news as religiously as others. They seem to be under the vague impression that the market has crashed and that Real Estate is in a tailspin. I can't blame those folks, there were a lot of doom and gloom prophets last year, and the American Media still reports on some of the ill health that is plaguing our cousins to the south. Here in Canada, things are as good as they ever have been.

With interest rates at a historical low, housing prices moving on up (to a deluxe apartment in the sky - if you are under 30 and get that reference, you watch too much television), and the fantastic affordability of housing in the Quinte area, now seems like a pretty good time for first time home buyers to look seriously at the prospect of buying a home.

Ontario's new Home Energy Audit Program

It's inevitable. Rather than moan about the obvious expenses that this new program is going to cause us, it might just be best to familiarise ourselves with the program. There doesn't seem to be any way around it.
Today was another miserable day in Haiti. I sometimes have to wonder about the fairness in life. The hard-luck Island was hit by an aftershock measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale. 6.1 is considered to be a major earthquake by any standards, yet after the events of last week this aftershock pales in comparison. Fortunately it doesn't appear to have derailed the efforts of the aid agencies. More information will emerge in a few short hours.

I would prefer to focus on something positive today. A young lady was recued from under the rubble of a shopping centre today. She had been buried there for a week without access to food or water. The team from SECOURISTES-SANS-FRONTIERES (Rescuers without Borders) worked for over twelve hours to pull her out. 25 year old Hoteline Losana immediately phoned her brother to inform him that she was alright.

I know that it probably doesn't sound like a big deal when faced with the fact that well over 100,000 people have died in this tragedy, however, it is still a miracle that someone could emerge from that alive after surviving seven days without water. Perhaps it's just one small miracle, and there are more to follow. We can hope.

World Vision on the ground in Haiti

Today, World Vision will rush 18 metric tons of life-saving supplies from its warehouse in Denver to the island nation of Haiti, which was hit by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake Tuesday, which has affected some 3 million people.

These supplies and others already pre-positioned by the aid group will help meet the immediate survival needs of those affected by the quake until rebuilding efforts can begin.

"When emergencies like this earthquake happen, it is critical that children and families gain access to basic supplies as quickly as possible," said Dave Toycen, president and CEO, World Vision Canada, who is on the ground in Port au Prince. "We keep supplies like these ready at all times in warehouses around the world, so that we can move immediately when emergencies like this happen anywhere."

Today's shipment will include the following supplies:

-- tarpaulins for temporary shelter
-- blankets
-- collapsible water containers
-- hygiene kits, which include a month's supply of toilet paper, sanitary
pads, toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs, body soap and laundry soap for a
    family of five
-- cooking sets, which include aluminum pots and pans, bowls, utensils

The flight will leave Denver airport today at 5:30 p.m. and is scheduled to arrive in Port-au-Prince at 6:30 a.m. on Friday.

World Vision Rushes Relief Supplies to Haiti Earthquake Survivors CIDA match offer expected to increase private donations

In addition, Canada's decision to match private donations given to humanitarian organizations for emergency relief in Haiti will measurably lift donations and help save lives.

"We are extremely encouraged by the government's decision," said Toycen. "It will dramatically improve our ability to provide emergency supplies to survivors and help rebuild Port au Prince."

Donations made by individual Canadians to eligible Canadian charitable organizations over the period of January 12 to February 12, 2010 will be matched dollar for dollar by the Government of Canada through the CIDA-managed Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund.

World Vision has been working in Haiti for some 30 years and has 800 staff members in Haiti. While World Vision's office in the capital sustained significant damage, all staff were confirmed safe and are initiating a response to the devastation.

World Vision's goal is to raise $5 million as quickly as possible to help children and families in Haiti to help as many of the 3 million people who have been affected by this disaster.
World Vision is on the ground right now in the Haitian city of Port-Au-Prince, helping families and children devastated by the 7.0-magnitude earthquake Tuesday afternoon. Your donations are vital to the relief efforts and are needed today.

Every dollar makes a difference and now if you give a donation to the Haiti Earthquake victims through World Vision, by February 12th, it will double in impact due to a generous contribution from the Canadian Government.

With an international response team flying in from around the globe to assist, our relief efforts are underway. World Vision Haiti is now distributing emergency supplies to families and children struggling to deal with this catastrophic disaster.

If you are old enough (and were unmotivated enough) to have watched a lot of late night television in the 1980's you probably remember him quite well. He was the Vietnamese immigrant who would appear on late night infomercials flogging his "get rich quick" scheme. What made him so memorable was that the infomercials were usually shot on a yacht with a fabulous mansion in the background and more importantly (for me anyway) he was surrounded by a bevy of attractive young women in their bikinis. His command of the English language also made him stand out a little.

I still remember a couple of his pitches;
"Are you man enough to get off your lazy American ass and go to Vu’s seminars?"
and
"Do you think these girls like me? NO, they like my money!"

I won't go into the specifics of Mr Vu's program, however, it is very safe to say that he wasn't telling anybody anything that they couldn't have figured out for themselves. People would flock to his seminars, spending large amounts of money to learn things that they probably already knew. I really wonder what the breakdown of Mr Vu's wealth was, how much did he earn from real estate and how much did he earn from selling his real estate system?

I'm thinking of marketing my own get-rich-quick system. The secret, I believe, is to convince everybody that I have already discovered the secret to becoming rich quickly, package it up into something eye-catching (hopefully with girls in bikinis), watch the money roll in and get rich. A self-fulfilling prophecy, so to speak. Perhaps my "system" will centre around how to succesfully market get-rich-quick schemes. Think that would work?
